Marybeth Carty assumed the role of Coordinator for the
Central Coast Service Learning Partnership in the fall of 2004, as Jan Marholin
left for a Principal position at San Caeytano Elementary School in Fillmore.
Formerly a member of the Service Learning Advisory Committee, Marybeth is
all too familiar with the concept of community service, and the goals of
service learning.

Marybeth has held the position of Director of the After School
Education & Safety Program at Carpinteria Middle School since 2002, where 7th
and 8th grade students are given the opportunity to receive homework assistance,
tutorials in core subject areas, enrichment activities and service learning
projects, such as the Main School Mentors program, Weekend Placemats, The Green
Squad environmental project, Letters to Iraq, and others. Prior to her
post at Carpinteria Middle School, Marybeth coordinated the successful
Mentor Match Program from 1996-2002 throughout the Carpinteria Unified School
District, where students in need of additional academic and emotional support
were matched with caring, screened & trained volunteer mentors from the
community. Marybeth is also active in the Carpinteria Woman's Club, Orchard to
Ocean Run (a district wide fund raiser), the California Avocado Festival, the
Carpinteria Triathlon, Girls Inc. Taste for Carpinteria, Hugs for Cubs, and

Kathy Kelly has been involved with Santa Barbara schools since 1995, both
as a substitute teacher and as a director of after-school technology programs.
She also worked under the Technology Literacy Challenge Grant, providing student
tutoring, technology support, and development of a technology-based reading
program for at-risk children. Before joining Jan Marholin in coordinating the
South Coast Service Learning Grant, Kathy was a technology associate for the
UCSB Graduate School of Education’s PT3 program (Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers
for Technology), working closely with local teachers and administrators.

Irene Falzone served on the committee
that developed goals for statewide k-12 implementation seven years ago. As a
former school board member, PTA president and non- profit director, Ms.
Falzone appreciates the role that Service Learning plays in helping all
students apply what they are learning. Ms. Falzone also directs a local
Science Initiative Network, focused on improving inquiry-based science for
students and teachers. |
